Hockey opens with W

Thursday, December 16, 2021

The Newington HS Co-op Hockey team skated to a 3-0 victory over McMahon-Norwalk Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.

After a scoreless first period characterized by tight-checking and physical play, the Nor'easters got on the scoreboard in the second period when defenseman Gavyn Munson (Canton) sent a long pass to teammate Josh Grimm (Berlin) who circled the NorMac net and fed Andrew Stribling (Berlin) for the goal. 22 seconds later off of the ensuing faceoff, senior Braeden Humphrey (Canton) poked the puck away from a McMahon-Norwalk player to teammate Harrison Ranger (Cromwell) who made a nifty pass to linemate Evan Oliver (Newington) for the goal and a 2-0 lead. Grimm then sealed the victory late in the 3rd period as he banged home a rebound after hard work from Mike Deegan (Berlin) and Tyler Leavitt (Manchester) created a scramble in the NorMac crease.

Junior goalie Jeremy Wagner (Manchester), making his first varsity start, stopped 20 shots on the way to the victory while McMahon-Norwalk netminder Patrick Gummer had 21 saves.

The Newington Co-op's next game will be Saturday at 5:10 PM as they travel to Norwich to face downstate rival Eastern Connecticut Eagles
